Information Sheet for Westmeath Travellers Primary Health Care Project

Westmeath Community Development:

Traveller Project

Position:  5 Community Health Workers part time 12 hours per week

Evidence from the All Ireland Traveller Health Study (2010) found that the health status of Travellers was poor compared to the settled population.  It also provided evidence that where Primary Health Care Projects existed the Health status of Travelers was better. In order to address the health inequalities in Westmeath and working from a social model of health, Westmeath Community Development are pleased to announce funding has been approved by the HSE to roll out the Primary Health Care programme in Westmeath….

Westmeath Community Development was founded in 1996 and is the Integrated Local Development Company for Westmeath, managing a range of projects which are included in the Rural Development programme or Local and Community Development Programme. Travellers were one of the priority communities highlighted through the LCDP strategic planning process 2011-2013.  WCD has succesfully managed the Westmeath Traveller project since 2008 and is now  rolling out A Primary Health Care Programme for Westmeath. The purpose of this project is to employ 5 part time Community Health Workers (CHWs).  The CHWs carry out health promotion activities on an outreach basis as per the established model of Traveller Primary Health Care Programmes.  Travellers are a minority ethnic group with different perceptions of health, disease and care needs. The model of Travellers Primary Health Care responds to these considerations through a partnership with the HSE.
