Primary Health Care Team for Travellers in place in Westmeath

The Primary Healthcare Project for Travellers is now in operation in the county. Primary Healthcare Projects have been set up all over the country since 1994, and Westmeath is the latest addition to this valuable service for Travellers. The project is developed as a partnership with, and funded by Westmeath Community Development Ltd and the Health Service Executive

The need for the project was identified by the All Ireland Traveller Health Study (2008) and thankfully with financial backing and support from the HSE, the project commenced in Westmeath on 3rd September 2013. The Project is peer-led and employs trained Community Health Workers, all of whom are members of the Traveller community.

The Primary Healthcare Project aims to support the active participation of Travellers in all areas of health development within the community. The Community Health Workers will carry out health promoting activities on an outreach basis, focussing initially in Athlone and Mullingar.

For further information on the Primary Healthcare Project for Travellers contact Colette Tuohy of The Traveller project on 04493 48571, or email, ctuohy@westcd.ie.
