Babies and their parents to experience arts in Mullingar on Culture Night day

Babies and their parents to experience arts in Mullingar on Culture Night day

Babies in Mullingar have the opportunity to participate in Culture Night on 20th September during an event designed with the tiniest of cultural tastes in mind.
Mothers and babies will be chilling out in a specially created Jazz Lounge, as part of the regular Friday morning Baby Café in Riverstown Community Centre, Dalton Park. Helium, Children's Arts and Health, is collaborating with Westmeath Community Mothers to provide extra fun, creative play and relaxation with live music in a sensory environment for some chilled-out Jazz themed play.  Babies (ages 0-18 months) and their parents are welcome from 11:30am-1pm. The event is free of charge. Friendly conversation and a cup of tea or coffee is included!

Miriam Mulrennan, Westmeath County Council Arts Officer says, "Westmeath Culture Night allows venues, groups and practitioners to showcase the breadth of talent and innovative initiatives taking place around the county. The collaboration between the Jazz Lounge, Helium - Children's Arts and Health and Westmeath Community Mothers is about many things: there is the fun and spontaneous creativity that it encourages, there is also the 'science bit' where we know from various studies the importance of music in early education and development for children. The physiology of creativity suggests we should start 'firing up' our creative minds as early as possible and it is great to acknowledge programmes like this - where this is happening, and in a fun environment."

Parents who have experienced past arts events with their babies have said:
"I found the performance very interesting.  My daughter likes the sounds and plays.  Her reactions were amazing.  I was really surprised".  (Mother of baby 7months)
"It was excellent, very interesting time, conscientious.  Gave me great ideas to play at home with my little boy".(Mother of baby 3 months)

Catriona Corcoran from Westmeath Community Development and Co-ordinator of Community Mothers in Westmeath comments: "Community Mothers & Westmeath Community Development are delighted to be associated with the Jazz Lounge for Culture Night 2013, babies and their parents love opportunities to sample new experiences. Jazz isn’t usually associated with babies, so maybe it will start a new trend.  All the parents are very excited and looking forward to the event."

This event is part of a national initiative called Baby Culture Night which is promoting art and early year events across Ireland on Culture Night.  For a full listing of other events in other counties please see: http://babyculturenight.wordpress.com/
