Mullingar Town Band awarded LEADER grant aid for renovations to their Band Hall
Mullingar Town Band are set undergo huge renovations to their Band Hall in Mullingar over the coming months as over €401,000 of LEADER 2014-2020 grant aid has been awarded towards the Band halls facelift.
Mullingar Town Band has a long history and association with Mullingar. Founded in 1879 it is deeply embedded in the culture of the town. They have occupied their current facility for over 40 years’.
Renovations to the hall will provide a fit for purpose building, suitable for existing and proposed Band and community activity. The hall space will be redesigned for increased use from the same square footage to maximise teaching and practice space. It will provide disabled access, sufficient and appropriate storage which will be suitable for children to access instruments. It will ensure an environmentally sustainable building seeing the installation of include triple glazing, zoned heating and LED lighting. These features will also significantly reduce running costs. It will facilitate the use of digital technology for teaching providing state of the art facilities for band members and the wider community. The refurbishment will provide a social space for members to socialise before and after practice which will further develop a sense of band community.
The provision of a refurbished fit for purpose facility will assist the Band to continue its role as a leading Irish marching band. It will enable them to increase their membership. It will also enable them to continue to provide musical activity to the people of Mullingar and surrounding areas many of whom are young people, thus creating a positive social impact on its members and the wider community.
Patricia Magee Chairperson of the Mullingar Town Band feels that “This is a fantastic opportunity for the Mullingar Town Band who are 140 years in existence this year, it will provide a top class facility for our members and the wider community”.
Theresa Geoghegan LEADER Community Development Worker at Westmeath Community Development adds that “ Mullingar Town Band are part of the cultural heritage of Mullingar and County Westmeath, this LEADER grant supports them in their growth and success as an voluntary organisation and offers a unique community space in the heart of Mullingar Town” .
This project has only been made possible due to a dedicated and visionary Mullingar Town Band committee who have worked tirelessly with LEADER staff at Westmeath Community Development to prepare their application and secure LEADER funding.
