Planting the seed for community collaboration in Mullingar
Westmeath Community Development is excited to showcase its first landscape collaboration project with Westmeath County Council and the Mullingar Tidy Towns Committee.
On June 27th last, partners on the project came together to design and plant a roundabout on Lynn Road, Mullingar. Westmeath Community Development initiated the project and provided the support of its Horticultural team and students from Belvedere Horticulture school. The project has improved the aesthetics of the roundabout, while also supporting Mullingar Tidy Towns in their work competing in the National Tidy Towns’ competition. Additionally, the project has provided practical and valuable work experience for horticulture students working towards their level 4 accreditation.
Frank Murtagh, CEO with Westmeath Community Development, commented,
‘Collaborative projects like this are the way forward, creating connectivity between voluntary groups and public bodies in improving public spaces. Westmeath Community Development is delighted to be part of this initiative and we hope it provides a template for future collaborations. Well done to Mullingar Tidy Towns and their Chairman Bill Collentine who provided guidance on the project’.
The project was overseen by John Smyth, horticulture programme co-ordinator with Westmeath Community Development. Speaking about the project, John added,
“We are delighted to be introducing perennial and biodiversity planting to public landscaping schemes in the county. Using roundabouts is a great way to visibly communicate to the public the importance of choosing plants that benefit wildlife. We’re excited to see how the planting scheme matures over the years to come. I would like to acknowledge the great contribution of Mullingar Tidy Towns, Westmeath County Council and our horticultural students. We look forward to completing similar projects in the future”.
Registrations are now open for the Level 5 Horticulture programme which begins on 9th September 2019 and runs until August 2020, delivered in the beautiful surrounds of Belvedere House & Gardens. For more information please contact Eileen Mulligan in Belvedere Horticulture School on 087-7923349.
