Community Mothers in 2013
Community Mothers are volunteers who use their experiences as mothers as well as local knowledge to support and encourage new parents. All visits take place in the parent's home and the service is free. If you have at least one child aged between 0 and 5 years you can request a Community Mother to call by asking at the ante-natal clinic, asking your Public Health Nurse, Practice Nurse or G.P. or by contacting the programme Coordinator, Caitriona Corcoran on 044 9348571 or by email firstname.lastname@example.org .
Community Mothers was funded under the Family Support Initiative of the HSE 2013.
Home Visiting Service
During 2013 47 families were referred to our service. In total 64 families were in receipt of a home visit during 2013. Our service carried out over 800 individual visits. The Community Mother Service is provided predominately in Mullingar and Athlone areas, but also includes the surrounding towns of Kinnegad, Rochfortbridge, Killucan, Moate, Glasson and Ballymore areas. By the end of 2013 the number of Community Mothers trained and providing a service to families rose from 16 to 18.
The numbers attending baby massage classes increased during the year to 131 families up 13% on the previous year. Classes take place in WCD offices in Mullingar, in Athlone classes take place in St Kieran’s Community Centre. During 2013 a new venue, the primary care unit in Kinnegad was added.
Baby Cafe in Mullingar
The number of parents attending Baby cafe in Mullingar remained at the same level as the previous year. During the year there were 365 individual visits by 59 parents. Baby cafe meets fridays in Riverside Community Centre 1130-1pm.
