Opening of LEADER funded project in Athlone: Willow Park & Meadowbrook Amenity Park

Willow Pk

Despite the inclement weather, an enthusiastic crowd was present in Willow Park community house for the official opening of Willow Park and Meadowbrook Amenity Park.

The park was funded by Westmeath Local Community Development Committee, the Department of Rural and Community Development under the LEADER Programme 2014-2020, Westmeath County Council and the local community and is located beside the community house. Willow Park was the first Rapid area in Westmeath to be approved for LEADER funding  and as a RAPID area qualified for 90% LEADER grant aid.

The opening ceremony was performed by Minister of State, Kevin Boxer Moran TD and Mayor of Athlone Municipal District, Cllr Frankie Keena  and was blessed by Fr Patrick Kimball.   Other speakers on the day included, Cllrs John Dolan and Tom Farrell, Peter Ormond from  WCD LEADER programme, Martina O Moore from Clann Credo, project designer Enda Fallon, and of course the very hard working Chairperson of the Willow Park Residents Association , Padraig Higgins who acted as MC for the event.

WCD has worked with Willow Park Community for many years including Community Development Support from SICAP, our Afterschool Childcare Facility and places and people on the Tus programme and is delighted to see this project come to fruition and we look forward to continuing working with the community in Willow into the future.

The LEADER grant of €34,271.32 allowed for the development of the amenity park which is located beside the Willow Park and Meadowbrook Community Centre. The  previously disused site of approx. 1 hectare has been transformed into a public parkland with native trees and includes walkways and paths as well as open playing areas. The Park is now a great recreational facility and will be of benefit to all ages within the community as well as to the general public.

LEADER is a community led approach to local development. It supports initiatives that seek to address locally identified needs and challenges. This project has been supported by Westmeath Local Community Development Committee under the Rural Development (LEADER) Programme 2014–2020.
