Rural Social Scheme build sensory garden for Praxis Care
On Friday 27th May Praxis care launched their new sensory garden that was built by the Rural Social Scheme under Westmeath Community Development. Olive Buckley (Acting Manager) approached Ian O’Flynn in the Volunteer centre which was then referred to the Rural social scheme department.
Praxis undertook a number of fundraising activities throughout the year to raise funds for the materials. John Smyth designed the sensory garden and Horticulturist leader Gary Guilfoyle along with fifteen Rural social scheme participants built the sensory garden in just four days.
The Rural Social scheme provides a supplementary income for low-income farmers and in return the participants work 19.5 hours per week. There are 33 participants currently on the Rural social scheme across Westmeath and they are carrying out fantastic work in their rural communities such as Tidy Towns, Community Centres, Parish centres, maintaining graveyards and assisting with the elderly.
“It was an opportunity for the Rural social scheme participants to come together for a fantastic project. I appreciate the time they have taken out from the Trojan work they carry out in their local communities on a daily basis and I hope the residence and staff of Praxis care enjoy the use of the sensory garden. The Launch highlighted the invaluable work that can be done in local communities with partnerships coming together.” Majella Boyhan Rural Social Scheme Supervisor
Praxis Care recently marked its 10th anniversary of providing intellectual disability services in Mullingar. Praxis Care, registered as a charity in 1983, is a major provider of services for adults and children with a learning disability, mental ill health, acquired brain injury and for older people, including people with dementia.
“It was a pleasure working with Westmeath Community Development and the team and a big thank you to everyone involved, to include the donations from everyone. A big thank you to all the service users and staff at Mullingar” Olive Buckley, Acting Manager.
