Care & Repair

The Care & Repair service has seen a significant increase in demand in recent months.

Westmeath Community Development are the contracted agency for Care and Repair with Age Action in Westmeath. We currently offer three services, the repair service, the trusted tradespersons referral service and since April this year, the Care, or Home Visit service, which is available in Athlone.

These services are available to people over 60 years of age and they are free of charge. All the people involved in Care and Repair jobs are volunteers and as part of the recruiting process, every volunteer is Garda Vetted by the Volunteer Centre of Westmeath and are issued ID cards. In the first 6 months of 2013, 141 Care and Repair jobs have been completed and demand has been growing each month.

The Home Visit service was developed in conjunction with Cairdeas, a network of groups working with older people in the county, and its aim is to provide a weekly home visit for older people who may be isolated and may not be able to access other services. This service is also free of charge and the visits are carried out by volunteers who are Garda Vetted and are issued with id badges. Each home visit is approximately one hour per week in which two to three volunteers will visit the home of the person who wishes to avail of the service. There has been great interest expressed in the Home Visit scheme to date which commenced in April. Currently they are thirty people volunteering for the Care & Repair service with a further twenty volunteers involved with the Home Visits.

If anyone would like to volunteer with the service, or avail of the service, they can contact Anne Campbell or Marion Gallagher in Care and Repair at 044 9348571 or email, acampbell@westcd.ie or go to www.westcd.ie for further information.
