Search for Volunteers

Opportunity Search

The I-VOL search engine works on searches by Location, Cause and Activity. In the location, please enter your county, town or local area. To help you narrow your search, you can also select your preferred cause (the goal of the organisation) and/or activity (the type of volunteering role you're looking for) from the drop-down lists. Should your search not give a return, try to broaden your search by "all causes" or "all activities".

You can also use the keyword search function to search for a specific organisation name or role.

Home Visit Service for Mullingar

New Home Visit Service being rolled out in Mullingar in April/May of 2014

The Home Visit Service - is an action included within the Westmeath Age Friendly Strategy of Westmeath County Council. In Westmeath this is delivered by Westmeath Community Development (WCD) as part of the Care & Repair Service.

The Home Visit Service was started in Athlone in 2013, and following reviews of this service it is planned to extend the project to Mullingar this year.

The service will be run in conjunction with various agencies working with older people in Mullingar.

Why is this needed? We are all aware of the isolation that some older people suffer from, and that as people get older their network of friends and activities

may diminish and that the opportunities to meet with other people reduces, and this can lead to loneliness and isolation.

What is it? Under this service an older person can avail of a regular weekly home visit from our volunteers. Each person will be assigned 2/3 volunteers who

will call weekly and spend time with the older person.

  • The service is free of charge
  • A Home Visit will be approximately one hour per week
  • Two/three volunteers will be assigned for each home visit
  • This service will not carry out any medical or household tasks
  • All volunteers will be Garda Vetted and have ID cards
  • All volunteers will be covered under the Care & Repair public liability insurance

Volunteer Management Training

Westmeath Volunteer Centre have recently completed our studies in Volunteer Management Training,   Whether you involve 1 or 1,000 volunteers, your organisation needs to ensure it manages volunteers effectively - and by that, we mean everything from how an individual volunteer fits in and works along side paid staff (if you have them) to creating and maintaining extended volunteer programmes. Central to any successful volunteering programme, big or small, is effective volunteer management.

As a way of recognising the work not for profit organisations do in Westmeath, we are offering you a free place in this full day course worth €50.
There will be 3 one day sessions in Athlone AND Mullingar and attendance is required only for one of them.  As the first event fills up, we will open up more of them up to a total of 72 places so get the tickets while you can!

Volunteer Ireland and Local Volunteer Centres' Annual TD Engagement Day

Ian O’Flynn and Michelle Raleigh, Westmeath Volunteer Centre are pictured with Willie Penrose TD and Robert Troy TD at Volunteer Ireland and local Volunteer Centres’ Annual TD Engagement Event at Buswell’s Hotel, Dublin on Tuesday 24th September 2013.

Volunteer Ireland and local volunteer centres were present at the annual TD Engagement Event at Buswell's Hotel, Dublin on Tuesday September 24th.

At the event Volunteer Ireland and local volunteer centres highlighted the need for the Government to the reduce barriers that unemployed people face when they wish to volunteer their time. These issues were highlighted by the Westmeath Volunteer Centre who have received feedback from volunteers, that applications to volunteer under the Voluntary Work Option can be refused. The Policy on the level and type of volunteering activity deemed acceptable under the Voluntary Work Option can differ greatly between different social welfare offices.

So far this year over 198 volunteers have registered with Westmeath Volunteer Centre. One of the most popular reasons for volunteering among newly registered volunteers has been to ‘gain or improve skills’. Now more than ever it is crucial that volunteers in Westmeath have access to volunteering opportunities that can help to improve their employability and take a step towards paid employment.
